I didn't have a problem with what they left out of the book. I think they handled some things better in the movie, conveying some points much more clearly than in the book.

That said, I found the movie very dark, very brooding, and feeling 2 hours longer than it was. The pace was slow and dragging. Dark murkiness with spots of not so dark somewhat funny. Not belly laughing funny but quiet chuckle funny.

Judging from the annoying family sitting behind me in the theatre with numerous child cautionings, chair sounds, candy wrapper crackling sounds and ups and downs in the last half of the film it was too slow moving for children under 10.

If you cried after reading the book you will cry watching the film. Special effects were mostly great! Even the phoenix was less animatronic than it was in its first appearance in film 2: Basilisk, which this movie has the closest feel too. Like the overlong Basilisk chase of Potter through the plumbing, this movie kept on going and going. Unlike the Basilisk chase, there was nothing I would choose to cut out or shorten. I just wish it had somehow just moved along a little faster. All right, maybe just a little bit less of that vanishing cabinet. That part was overworked; we got it already. Move along. Aarrgh. There it is AGAIN!

It has been a while since I read the book. I never got around to rereading it. I did not look up how long the film ran nor do I wear a watch. I mention this only because when as a movie viewer I start to think about : WHEN does this happen in the book? or HOW long have I been here? HOW much LONGER will this go? There is a problem. When the film finally came to a part I remembered, that I remembered was near the end of the book it, the first thought was FINALLY we're near the end. And then I got sucked into some really great special effects but it still didn't end. There were a few more points of It.Still.Didn't.End! Then it was over.

I want to see it again. I want the DVD so that I can stop it to get up and do something else or so that I can speed it up just a little to keep it moving.
